Midway
Island's history includes being a fueling station for the China Clipper in the mid 1930's
and as the site of the Battle of Midway in 1942, a turning point in World War II. Now a
National Wildlife Refuge, the islands overflow with an abundance of wildlife, natural
beauty and historical treasures. The Fish and Wildlife Service controls Midway and has
contracted with a private company to operate the sports fishing program. Only a maximum of
twelve lucky anglers can fish at once which insures this fishery will stay as undiscovered
and sparsely fished as it is today.
In just a few days
of trolling or casting at Midway, it is possible to catch a wide variety of offshore and
inshore gamefish. May through September is the best time for fishing, with August and
September the best months for marlin. And the marlin fishing here is simply fantastic! The
fish are big, 300 to 700 pound marlin are not uncommon, with multiple hook ups each day.
The first striped marlin show up in May and the blues arrive in June. Marlin in good
numbers hang around until the end of the season, usually September or early October. All
spinning and conventional gear is provided and you'll fish with experienced captains on
board one of the 22' or 26' Glacier Bay power catamarans for reef fish, or on one of the
38' Bertrams for offshore fishing. Also, the scuba diving is incredible - the warm, clear
Pacific provides excellent visibility and the waters are teeming with colorful, exotic
fish.
Located 1,200 miles northwest of Honolulu, the air service to Midway consists of two
charter flights each week. Your accommodations will be in one of the two refurbished
Bachelor Officers' Quarters buildings. The rooms are air conditioned, attractive and have
all the amenities of a first class hotel. You'll find the food is surprisingly good for
such an isolated destination. The island features two choices for dining - an outstanding
restaurant with a French chef or the converted Navy galley with wonderful American and
international dishes. This is a great trip for the sports angler who also has an interest
in military history, seabirds or marine life. There is no other place in the world like
Midway! Three and four day packages are available, but a seven day stay is recommended in
order to really experience all this diverse destination has to offer. Prices range from
$2,850 to $4,350 per person and include air from Honolulu.
